Why motivation is overrated

Why motivation is overrated

Most people who fail at getting fitter don't fail because they lack motivation. They fail because they mistake motivation for a plan.

Motivation is a feeling. Feelings are the least reliable thing in your life. They come when you've slept well, when the weather's good, when a friend says something kind. And they go — silently and without warning — the moment life gets in the way. Any strategy for improving your health that depends on how you feel on Wednesday at 6am is a strategy that will fail on the first cold morning.

What actually changes bodies and lives is a small number of the right actions, repeated when you don't feel like it, held together by people who care whether you show up. That's it. Everything else is decoration.

**A better way to think about it**

Instead of asking 'do I feel motivated to train today?', high-consistency people ask three quieter questions:

1. What was I going to do today, and where is it in my week?
2. What is the smallest version of that I can still commit to?
3. Who else is expecting me?

Those three questions are, in a sentence, the whole model. Plan the week. Shrink the action. Add accountability. Do that for a year and you will look and feel like a different person — regardless of how you 'feel' about it on any given morning.

**Why structure beats willpower**

Willpower is a limited resource. Researchers have argued about the specifics for decades, but the everyday experience is undeniable: it's harder to make good decisions at the end of a long day than at the start. Structure removes decisions. If your training is already booked, already programmed and already coached, you don't need willpower — you just need to be there. That's a much smaller ask.

At Kore we build that structure with our members. A programme they can actually follow. Weekly coaching that adjusts to their week. Community that notices when they disappear. It's boring, in the best way — and it works.

**The role of motivation**

Motivation isn't useless. It's a spark. Use it to sign up, to book the consultation, to buy the shoes. Then hand the wheel to structure and let it drive.

Because here's the truth nobody selling you a 6-week transformation wants to admit: motivation follows action, not the other way around. You do the work first — even when you don't want to — and the feeling of momentum arrives second. Wait for the feeling to arrive first and you'll wait forever.

Start small. Book something you can't easily cancel. Tell one person. Then show up on the day you don't want to. Do that four times and you're already ahead of nearly everyone.
